until 15.02. „Immer wieder muss die Welt neu gesehen werden“. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Painting, Watercolor, Mixed. Repro Beschneite Zweige, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, 1951, Öl auf Leinwand, Photo: © VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2026

The Brücke-Museum is dedicating an extensive exhibition to its initiator, the artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Around 70 paintings from the donations made between 1964 and 1974 and the artistic estate of the founding member of the Brücke artists’ group are on view. The museum thus houses the world’s largest collection of Schmidt-Rottluff’s art.

The exhibition draws on this rich collection and offers an overview of the artist’s entire oeuvre – from his Expressionist beginnings in 1905 to his monumental, colourful, and powerful late work of the 1960s. It reveals not only an impressive stylistic development but also a close connection between art and biography. The exhibition of this collection becomes a journey through the stages of Karl Schmidt-Rottluff’s life: influenced by the revolutionary spirit of the Brücke artists’ group, the years of war and his attachment to the landscapes that surrounded him, he repeatedly discovered “the world anew”.  Through the interplay of vibrant colours and deliberate simplification of form, he imbued his motifs with an emotional power that is still palpable today.

With this multifaceted exhibition, the Brücke-Museum not only honours Schmidt-Rottluff’s Expressionist work and his generous gift to the Federal State of Berlin in 1964 – the founding hour of the museum – but also presents research on the artist’s catalogue

The applied arts of the Brücke have been little studied and exhibited to this date. This is all the more surprising given that Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Emil Nolde spent their lives designing furniture, jewelry and carpets in addition to their paintings and prints. It is precisely these ‘applied arts’ that reflect the innovative creative impulsive and the conscious break with the aesthetic conventions that are characteristic of the Expressionist artists.

The exhibition Kunst Hand Werk Brücke examines the manufacturing processes and contexts of creation, thus enabling completely new perspectives on the work of the artist community. It approaches the subject matter in an innovative way through the materials used (wood, metal and textiles) and works closely with practitioners to convey the special techniques.

A comprehensive catalogue accompanies the exhibition.

05.07. – 25.10. Brücke / Natur Natur / Brücke . Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Emil Nolde, Fritz Bleyl, Erich Heckel, Max Pechstein, Otto Mueller. Painting, Print, Work on Paper, Drawing, Watercolor, Lithography, Linocut, Sculpture, Installation. Repro Baumgruppe auf Fehmarn, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, 1913, Aquarell über Kreide auf Papier

At the beginning of the 20th century, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel left the cities to paint and live in nature. In their paintings, drawings, prints and watercolours, they celebrate the landscape, life, the human body and dynamic existence. The exhibition focuses on the Brücke artists’ quest for harmony between humans and nature. Almost 100 years after the Brücke debate, our relationship with nature has changed fundamentally. What can we learn from nature? How can a new relationship between nature, art and humanity emerge?

Coinciding with the exhibition, the museum’s artistic nature trail Learning from … Nature will open in the garden, for which nine contemporary artists are creating new site-specific works.

07.11. – 28.02.2027 Schwedische Moderne . Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald, Nils Dardel, Henri Matisse, Leander Engström, Birger Simonsson, Einar Jolin, Gösta Sandels, Tor Bjurström, Ragnar Sandberg, Ake Göransson, Nils Nilsson, Inge Schiöler, Karin Parrow, Ivan Ivarson. Painting, Work on Paper, Drawing, Watercolor. Repro Ateljéinteriör, Sigrid Hjertén, 1916, Öl auf Leinwand, Photo: Moderna Museet

The Brücke-Museum presents the first comprehensive exhibition on Swedish modernism in Germany. Celebrated as ‘Swedish Expressionists’ at the Berliner Sturm gallery in 1915, the paintings and drawings of artists such as Sigrid Hjertén and Isaac Grünewald are known to only a few in Germany today. The exhibition aims to change this.

The presentation focuses on the artist groups De Unga [The Young], De åtta [The Eight] and the Göteborg Colourists. Like the Brücke artists, they also wanted to break away from entrenched academic traditions and pursue new artistic paths. The exhibition aims to illustrate the common aspirations of the groups as well as to explore the diverse and independent artistic developments of the participating artists.

Key works from the Moderna Museet collection in Stockholm are on display, as this is the second part of an important and forward-looking cooperation project in which the two museums are exchanging their collections. After the Brücke Museum’s collection was on display in Stockholm in 2024, the exhibition Swedish Modernism presents the second part and is thus able to show highlights from the Moderna Museet in Berlin for the first time.

The exhibition is a collaboration with Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
