Joseph Mader, who was strongly influenced by the art of Max Beckmann in the early 1930s, is one of the most recent rediscoveries of classical modernism. Since this year, the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich has been helping to make the artist's life's work visible and accessible to art history. We would like to share this rediscovery with you. In Berlin, we are the first gallery to present pictures from his entire creative period.

Our new exhibition literally follows its title: We open our art cabinets and show works from the collection.

Meirowsky's (1920-2012) works uniquely intertwine impressions and experiences from her two worlds, Berlin and Ibiza, with figurative and abstract forms often merging. The exhibition is complemented by sculptures by the sculptor Waldemar Grzimek (1918-1984).

The exhibition focuses on the Hamburg Secession, the only group of classical modern artists in the city on the Elbe. Founded in 1919, it saw itself as a platform for like-minded people and united artists from the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture and literature. It produced strong artistic personalities who enriched the cultural life of the Hanseatic city with their diverse independent contributions.

As a sculptor, painter and lyricist, the Berlin artist Wolfram Beck (1930-2004) left behind an extensive and multifaceted oeuvre. In our presentation we show sculptures, assemblages, drawings and paintings. Beck was a master of aesthetic rigour and precision craftsmanship with a high sensitivity for the treatment of the respective material such as wood, steel, bronze, acrylic glass and stone. The exhibition presents sculptures, drawings and paintings from the 1960s to the 1990s.

The exhibition features paintings, woodcuts, etchings and collages by the painters and graphic artists Wilfried Reiff, Fritz Kuhr and Rolf Curt. As precise observers of their surroundings, these and other artists tell multi-layered and allusive stories and anecdotes in their works. They lead the viewer into familiar or mysterious worlds, sensitively criticise and create new references to reality. 

The exhibition "With quiet strength" presents artworks by Vera Schwelgin, Wolfgang Reinke and Emerita Pansowová, whose pictures and sculptures have a quiet yet haunting force. The masterful woodcuts by Vera Schwelgin correspond with the calm and sensitive sculptures by Emerita Pansowová. The chalk drawings by Wolfang Reinke cast a spell over the viewer with their quiet intensity.
