The new, experimental exhibition presents the juxtaposition of selected exhibits from the FOTOGRAFIS Collection from the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien with photographs by Helmut Newton from the museum's own archive. In the form of 60 diptychs, sometimes a formal, sometimes a thematic proximity is illustrated and a tense coexistence or juxtaposition of historically iconic but also unknown photographs is staged - creating an unusual, large imaginative space in the reception.

Based on the work that Helmut Newton produced in Monte Carlo and other locations on the southern French Riviera from the 1970s onwards, this new exhibition celebrates Newton's almost 100 legendary and rarely shown photographs in a class of their own. Between palm trees and the sea, but also minimalist backdrops such as building sites or a simple garage, Newton changed his perspective, indeed his style, which he had previously developed so incomparably in Paris - but his colorful fashion images, advertising shots and mysterious b/w sequences from the Riviera also redefined the zeitgeist.

In der Kunst des Dadaismus und Surrealismus nimmt Max Ernst eine herausragende Stellung ein. Sein Name steht für grenzüberschreitende Arbeiten, die Traum und Wirklichkeit verbinden. Die Ausstellung „FOTOGAGA. Max Ernst und die Fotografie. Die Sammlung Würth zu Gast“ begibt sich erstmals auf die Suche nach Berührungspunkten zwischen seinem Werk und der Fotografie. Zum hundertsten Geburtstag des Surrealismus zeigt das Museum für Fotografie einen repräsentativen Überblick der Arbeiten von Max Ernst aus der Sammlung Würth. Ergänzend kommen Werke aus der Kunstbibliothek, dem Kupferstichkabinett, der Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg und der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin hinzu sowie weitere hochkarätige Leihgaben aus Museen und Privatsammlungen in Frankreich und Deutschland.

In addition to Newton's iconic and many unknown Berlin pictures taken between the 1930s and the noughties, the other exhibition rooms also show photographs of his earliest sources of inspiration. In addition, this exhibition spans the period from the "Golden Twenties", through the destruction of the war, reconstruction, the building and fall of the Berlin Wall to current image production in Berlin.

On 2 June 2022, the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin opened its new exhibition “HOLLYWOOD” featuring works by Eve Arnold, Anton Corbijn, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Michael Dressel, George Hoyningen-Huene, Jens Liebchen, Ruth Harriet Louise, Inge Morath, Helmut Newton, Steve Schapiro, Julius Shulman, Alice Springs, and Larry Sultan. Photographs by George Hurrell and publications by Annie Leibovitz and Ed Ruscha will also be on view in glass displays.
