Vernissage 29.11., 18h–22h

Current

until 23.11. I feel you feeling me. Joanna Jones. Painting. Repro Installation view: Joanna Jones at Galerie Gilla Loercher, Joanna Jones, 2024, Photo: Ute Schendel

Joanna Jones has developed a very idiosyncratic visual language over the last four decades, which is probably most closely related to the Abstract Expressionism. And yet Jones’ approach is quite different, also more radical and immediate. Her imagery is very energetic and expressive, and she allows the viewer to participate in her incredible sense of colour and tone. The painter uses her body exclusively for the application of paint, whereby it is not about frottage here but rather about dancing, flowing movement in the paint and a direct expression of an inner world, her thoughts and feelings.

Discovering the work of French artist Sandrine Mahéo (born 1974) means “immersing oneself in a wealth of colors that constantly raises questions and subtly reveals the question of form in painting on several aesthetic levels (...) without necessarily questioning the canvas as such, without necessarily negating the gesture and without making it the be-all and end-all of painting.” (Text: Jean-Francois Desserre)

Regarder est un pouvoir / Looking is Power is an exhibition project based on a three-month research stipend in the spring of 2022 to the federal Yukon Territory in northwestern Canada. During this trip, French artist Capucine Vandebrouck witnessed the seasons and landscapes change, shifting from white to green and changing drastically. She observed the melting of the ice, the appearance of the first spring crocuses, but also the devastating effects of global warming on the environment, such as forest fires and drunken forests. The various works on display in the exhibition are objects that bear witness to the decay and impermanence of the landscapes of northern Canada.
