Profile

Galerie Martin Mertens was founded in 2006 in Berlin Mitte and has been located in Linienstraße since 2013.
We represent a programme of young international art. The artistic media range from representational painting positions (Domenico Grenci, Robert Bosisio, among others) to abstract painting (Katrin Bremermann, Pius Fox), object art and sculpture (Tomoyuki Ueno, Bruno Walpoth).

Past

19.10. – 21.12. Neue Werke. Pius Fox. Painting. Repro o.T. (Nr. 24013), Pius Fox, 2024, Ölpastel auf Papier, gerahmt, 24 x 17 cm, Photo: Pius Fox

Fox's art moves between painting and drawing. His work is always in the area of tension between form and content, representational and abstract. Often appears more or less figuratively recognizable spatial situations, vistas such as through doors or windows, or generally architectural elements. Again and again, however, human figures or "still lifes" are mixed into his work - a small mirror on the wall, a few books, a staircase or a table. Figuration, abstraction and imagination mix in his work and together form their own cosmos. One notices in his work how enthusiastically Fox explores the history of painting and fine art in general and makes it useful for himself. The whole range of art history seems to be an ever new and varied source of inspiration for Fox. It is particularly refreshing that, despite all the historical echoes and his young age, he has very consistently developed his astonishingly confident and independent signature.

07.09. – 12.10. Neue Werke. Tomuyuki Ueno. Sculpture. Repro Wave Sculpture 30. Sept. 2021_10:44 Barcelona, Tomoyuki Ueno, 2023, Marmor, hinter Acryl montiertes Foto, Aluminium, 42 x 118 x 3 cm, Photo: Tomoyuki Ueno

Ueno's work is extremely multi-layered. In recent years, however, it seems to have been increasingly influenced by nature. Especially during his stay in the Japanese mountains during the 2020 pandemic, Ueno became very aware of the themes of nature, life and death. This preoccupation with nature is dominated by a Buddhist worldview rather than a Christian one, as it is about the intertwining of life and death, decay and rebirth.

20.04. – 08.06. new works. Riki Mijling, Katrin Bremermann. Sculpture. Repro Four Pieces III, Riki Mijling, 2009, Corten Stahl, zwei Elemente, variabel kombinierbar, 72 x 72 x 216 cm, Photo: Riki Mijling

The Dutch sculptor Riki Mijling is part of a rich tradition of non-representational, post-minimalist sculptures. Although she is influenced by American minimalists such as Donald Judd, Carl Andre and Richard Long, the European ZERO movement with artists such as Heinz Mack and Otto Piene is also an important point of reference. Despite its formal rigor, Mijling's work is also characterized by aspects of sensuality and playfulness.

25.01. – 13.04. Ravages of Time. Raquel Maulwurf. Drawing. Repro Agent Orange, Raquel Maulwurf, 2020, Kohle, Pastell auf Museumskarton, 152 x 260 cm, Photo: Raquel Maulwurf

While Maulwurf’s previous work dealt with the remnants and destruction of war, her new work captures our world’s chaos when hit by the forces of nature and ecological disasters; exploring the notion of whether nature is striking back at us for polluting its oceans, poisoning its air, burning down forests and turning the ground we walk on into radioactive wasteland.

21.10.2023 – 20.01. Neue Skulpturen. Bruno Walpoth. Sculpture. Repro Weiterziehen, Bruno Walpoth, 2023, Ahorn, Ed. Nr. 2ap , 48 x 20 x 28 cm, Photo: Bruno Walpoth
26.08.2023 – 14.10.2023 now - here - this. Katrin Bremermann. Painting, Sculpture. Repro o. T. (Nr. 2365), Katrin Bremermann, 2023, Lack auf gewachstem Papier, 40 x 30 cm, Photo: Katrin Bremermann
26.08.2023 – 14.10.2023 now - here - this. Katrin Bremermann. Painting, Sculpture. Repro untitled (No. 2365), Katrin Bremermann, 2023, laquer on waxed paper, 40 x 30 cm, Photo: Katrin Bremermann

27.05.2023 – 08.07.2023 Gruppenausstellung Zeichnung. Kuratiert von Felix Baxmann. Painting. Repro o. T., Felix Baxmann, 2022, Mikropigmenttusche auf Millimeterpapier, 30x21cm
25.03.2023 – 13.05.2023 Doppelausstellung. Robert Bosisio, Pius Fox. Painting. Repro Robert Bosisio, Pius Fox 2023

Fox's art moves between painting and drawing. His work is always in the area of tension between form and content, representational and abstract. Often appears more or less figuratively recognizable spatial situations or generally architectural elements.

There is hardly another way to approach Bosisio’s paintings than quietly and contemplatively. From a distance, a seemingly abstract composition often comes together to form a face or a figure.

21.01.2023 – 18.03.2023 Interstellar. Sebastian Herzau. Painting. Repro the great below B. II-19 L., Sebastian Herzau, 2019, Acryl auf Leinwand, 160x140cm

At the beginning of the year, we are showing our first solo exhibition with the painter Sebastian Herzau, who was awarded the Halle Art Prize in his hometown of Halle in 2019.

Herzau's extensive oeuvre is largely concerned with the classical subjects of painting: landscape, portrait, still life. The treatment of these subjects, however, takes a very individual form and is spiced with the artist's typical humour.

12.11.2022 – 14.01.2023 Nel Silenzio Della Visione (In Der Stille Des Blicks). Domenico Grenci. Painting. Repro Billie (1), Domenico Grenci, 2022, Öl und Bitumen auf Leinwand, 36 x 46 cm

The Bolognese painter Domenico Grenci (*1981) focuses his work on portraits of women. Using a mixture of oil, red chalk, bitumen and charcoal, he creates extremely delicate pictures in which the portrayed persons seem to appear only fleetingly. They appear very vulnerable and reserved, as if they only cautiously venture out into the world through the surface of the paper, or canvas.

03.09.2022 – 05.11.2022 Da Wo Es Schön Ist. Felix Baxmann. Painting. Repro Pferd, Felix Baxmann, 2022, Mikropigmenttusche auf Millimeterpapier, 30 x 42 cm

Felix Baxmann's largest group of works consists of ink drawings on paper, which are made up of countless tiny weaving patterns. They are sometimes condensed in several layers to create structures reminiscent of textiles. His working process is almost meditative and requires extreme discipline and perseverance.

18.06.2022 – 30.07.2022 Zauberberg Effekt. Jens Hausmann. Painting. Repro Modern House Nr. 37 / Lost in Paradies, Jens Hausmann, 2021, Öl auf Leinwand, 180 x 175 cm

For many years, Berlin-based painter, Jens Hausmann has been one of the most notable painters in the field of architecture in central Europe. Even if this label in itself is slightly misleading, because for Hausmann his work is not about architecture, but rather about painting.

In our current exhibition of Bettina Krieg’s work, we are showing a group of new mostly large-scale drawings created over the past two years. Bettina’s line drawings evoke many associations. One can think of extremely enlarged hair bundles or waves. In any case, they are about movement and rhythm.
