Rissa (*1938), who studied under K.O. Götz in Düsseldorf from 1959 to 1965 and explored Cubism, Expressionism and Art Informel, opted for figurative painting in 1964. Her artistic conception is based on the idea of creating a seminal, object-orientated paintings in terms of both content and form. For the first time, we are presenting the work of the painter Rissa in Berlin with a selection of works from the years 1966-2024 - paintings that readily reflect current events.

Paula Modersohn-Becker counts among the most important artists at the beginning of the 20th century, setting decisive impulses in the development of modern painting. Drawing was crucial in the development of her unique, modern pictorial expression. On the occasion of the publication of her catalogue raisonné of drawings and sketchbooks by Hirmer Verlag, we present a special selection of her paintings and works on paper.

Our exhibition unites two artists who deal with geometric abstraction and movement, thus embedding their works in concretism and constructivism. The swedish Olle Baertling (1911–1981) was very present in the art scene of the 1950s/1960s. A selection of his non-figurative paintings executed 1953–1974 will be on show with us. The younger german Gerhard von Graevenitz (1934–1983) will be present with early "structures" (1959/60) and four kinetic objects made 1975–78.

The swiss artist André Thomkins (1930–1985) counts among the most interesting artistic positions of the postwar era. Living in Germany since 1952, he creates - blessed with an exuberant inventiveness - an oeuvre that in its diversity resists art-historical classification. We open an insight to this multi-faceted work presenting – besides oil-paintings, watercolours and drawings – the so-called Lackskins, Rollagen and Scharniere as well as rapport patterns and paraphrases.

Birgitt Bolsmann (1944-2000) consciously opted for a realistic visual language in 1973 after her university studies. In detailed oil paintings and pencil drawings she fixes her motifs, which she takes from fashion photography and striking advertising using them at the same time to critically question the image of women propagated. Bolsmann was last exhibited in the Realism Triennials at the Gropius-Bau in 1993 and 1996. We present a comprehensive overview of her work for the first time.

Our exhibition brings together four women artists who explore representationalism and figuration in painting. We start of with portraits by Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) showing how she proceeds from realism to two-dimensional abstraction with proto-cubist features. With Birgitt Bolsmann (1944-2000), Almut Heise (*1944) and Rissa (*1938) we present three women painters who in the 1960s consciously decided against abstraction and took different paths in representational painting.
